  • 12–18 May 2023 [LIVE]Both authors attended and presented at the World Tunnel and Underground Space Congress 2023 in Athens, Greece.
  • 30 March 2023 [ONLINE] Antonia took part in a breakfast meeting hosted by the Tunnelling Association of Kenya.
  • 10 January 2023 [ONLINE} ITACET Lunchtime Lecture Series: 'Sustainability issues – the future of underground', where Antonia presented our ideas on sustainable development of the subsurface as explained in our book.
  • 14 January 2023 [LIVE} Both authors participated in the 2023 World Systemic Forum in the underground Hagerbach facility near Sargans in Switzerland. Underground spaces come in many shapes, sizes, and uses. It is the innovative uses as part of systemic change that the authors engaged on with the other participants. It led to an enlightening dialogue.
  • 2 December 2022 [LIVE} Antonia gave a presentation at the FLEXIBLE PLANNING conference at the Gdansk University of Technology in Poland.
  • 11 October 2022 [LIVE]As part of the British Tunnelling Society (BTS) Conference, Antonia presented on the innovative uses of underground space in London on 11 October 2022.
  • 20 October 2022 [LIVE]Antonia talked about the sustainability of underground spaces at the Italian Tunnelling Society Forum on 20 October 2022 in Bologna.
  • 27 October 2022 {online] Han and Antonia gave a training session on underground space in conjunction with the ITACET Foundation and the Argentinean Tunnelling and Underground Space Association –

  • 2 September 2022 [LIVE]Antonia and Han held a session on Underground Sustainability as part of the training session preceding the WTC 2022 in Copenhagen.
  • 23 June 2022 [LIVE] Antonia presented at the Changing Cities Conference.
  • 26–30 June 2022 {LIVE} World Urban Forum. Antonia attended WUF11 in Katowice, Poland. She was present at the exhibition and gave presentations together with other members of the ITACUS and ISOCARP delegations at the joint booth in the Exhibition Hall.
  • 21 May 2022 [LIVE] Both authors were present at the World Systemic Forum held at the Hagerbach Test Facility in Switzerland. The World Systemic Forum aims to be a platform where participants can engage on questions related to systemic change.
  • 15 March 2022: [ONLINE] 14:00 – 15:30 CET, ISOCARP Cyber Agora III with Han and Antonia and other experts focussing on underground urbanism. The event was recorded and can be viewed here.
  • 3 February 2022 [LIVE] The authors gave a lecture as part of the ARCAM Sub Terra Exhibition onNew Roots for Underground Urbanism running from 1 October 2021 till 6 February 2022 at the Amsterdam Architecture Centre. It was broadcast live by the local AT5 TV station.
  • 8 February 2022: [ONLINE] 13:00 – 14:30 CET, lunchtime lecture series in collaboration with ITACET, the ITA Committee on Education and Training. Both authors were amongst a host of lecturers who looked at the importance of urban underground space.
  • 6 November 2021 [online]Han and Antonia were pleased to participate in an important seminar highlighting the potential and current uses of underground spaces in Colombia, Chile and Mexico.Han gave a short address by video message highlighting the importance of awareness and knowledge about the subsurface.Antonia talked about the work of ITACUS in the field of promoting underground spaces as an integral part of the cities of the future. She stressed that they should not be used as an urban service layer but incorporated in multi-functional and publicly accessible developments.
  • 31 October 2021 [online] As part of World City Day celebrations, Antonia and Han took part in an online debate on how underground space can be leveraged to make cities more resilient.
  • 28 October 2021[online] ISOCARP World Planning Congress, Doha, Qatar. As part of the pre-congress activities, the second Cyber Agora on Underground Urbanism was hosted by Antonia and Han.
  • 5 October 2021 [online] The authors both presented during the Urban Economy Forum session on The Future of Urbanisation: Pathways Forward.
  • 13, 14 and 15 October 2021 [online[ Han and Antonia both gave a lecture during the XVI Andean Tunnels and Underground Works Seminar in Colombia.
  • 6-8 September 2021 AFTES Congress Paris, France. Han and Antonia presented their paper 'A Multi-Dimensional Planning Approach (MDPA) - Towards a New Rationale to Planning And Visualising Underground Spaces as Part of the Urban Metabolism'.
  • 22 September 2021 [webinar] ITA Tunnelling Week – ITACUS session. Antonia and Han presented during this session which will look at underground space as part of environmental planning.
  • 26 June 2021– 15:30 CET/1.30 pm UTC [webinar] Han and Antonia moderated the ISOCARP Cyber Agora on Underground Urbanism. Join us for the first of three Cyber Agora with this theme.
  • 16 June 2021 Hagerbach NXT50 Festival Han and Antonia took part in the celebration of 50 years Hagerbach Test Gallery. During the festival, they will look forward to the next 50 years as part of the Mission Earth First initiative. Click on the date for more information on the program and registration.
  • 21 April 2021 – 14:00-15:15 CET (12 noon-1:15 pm UTC) [webinar] Antonia and Han hosted the fifth webinar in the Hagerbach NXT50 series, this time focussing on 'Planning for Sustainable Underground Spaces'.   • 26-27 March 2021 [webinar] Both authors presented at IFUS,the 8th China (Shanghai) Conference on Infrastructure development of Underground Space 2021 as part of World Cities Day.
  • 11 March 2021 [webinar[ Antonia gave a presentation on 'Perspectives on Underground Space: Past, Present, Future' for the Brazilian Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (CBT). You watch a recording of the webinar here.
  • 4 March 2021[webinar] Antonia took part in an after-work talk 'I DO IT MY WAY' organised by the Gender & Diversity Commission of D-BAUG ETH Zürich to celebrate World Engineering Day 2021.

  • 3 February 2021[webinar] Han and Antonia joined an online round table to round off the ISOCARP congress. They discussed how underground space can contribute to post-Oil cities. More information on their publication in the ISOCARP Review 16 can be found here.
  • 3 February 2021[webinar] ITACUS held a special session during the virtual ACUUS 17 World Conference.The session "Planning for sustainable underground spaces" was hosted by co-chairs and co-authors and featured the activity groups of ITACUS on Urban Integration (Dr. Marilu Melo in dialogue with Shana Debrock (Flanders Spatial Planning Dept.) and Loretta von der Tann (NGI); Underground Space Sustainability (Dr. Chrysothemis Parasevopolou), and Young Professional Think Deep Program (Petr Salak and Rosanne Verloop).

54th ISOCARP Congress

The authors attended the International Society of City and Regional Planners‘ (ISOCARP) congress on 'Cool Planning'. They were thrilled to be awarded the 'Gerd Albers Award 2018 for Best Book' during this congress.
